Hi, this is Casey from Skubbs. We are a full stack digital agency. We develop websites, mobile apps, and provide digital marketing services – hyper local Search Engine Optimization among the main ones.

Today, I will run you through some of the SEO tools we recommend if you are going to be doing keyword research and on-page optimisation for your website.”

Ok, so without further ado, let’s discuss the tools:

Google Analytics

It all starts with a search. If you have a website, Google Analytics or GA is the most important and the first thing you should install because it shows you how the traffic is engaging to your website.

Google Search Console

Next, you want to uncover what are the keywords people use in order to get to your website from Google, and here’s where Google Search Console or GSC will come into play.

Google Autocomplete

Now that you have the essentials, it’s time to create a plan on how to draw potential customers to your site using the keywords they will often look for in Google and this is where Google autocomplete comes into play. Try typing head terms and you can see at the bottom of the page the common search phrases – hold those lists down because you will be using that as a reference later on when you start writing your blog, we will expand more on that topic in a couple of minutes.

Google Keyword Planner

Once you have the head terms, plug them to Google keyword planner and see how many permutations, top volume search and the cost per click amount you need to pay in order send the traffic to your site, this is paid search and we will cover this on another video but let’s keep our focus on SEO.

Ubersuggest, KW Finder and KeywordTool.io

Similarly, you can use Ubersuggest for checking keyword permutations, KW Finder, and Keyword Tool.io. But I recommend to stick to Google keyword planner for now because if you’re starting from 0, you can just simply enter your website and have Google suggest what are the best keywords based on the services you offer. Make sure your service pages or product pages are well written.

For intermediate users, SEMRush is the tool. Also, from here, you can do a reverse research on your competitors and what keywords they are using to get their customers.

Now that you have the list of popular keywords based on their monthly average search volume on Google, it’s time to optimize your site to increase the relevance. And by relevance, it means content, and the most common thing beginners do is they pepper the keywords as many times as they can around the website. WRONG! If this is 6 or 7 years ago, this might work, but with Google major algorithm updates like Panda and Penguin, your website gets easily penalized for keyword spamming.

So, what do you do? You go back to Google search console and look at the google autocomplete or the suggested related searches at the bottom and start writing 2 blogs according to those.

In the question of how often should I state the keyword, don’t sweat it – once is enough, what is important is the main idea: the context, because Google is the biggest encyclopedia and thesaurus in the world and it is smart enough to pick up what you’re writing is about.

Now if you’re outsourcing the blog or the page content of your website, you want to make sure it’s not a copy-paste of another article somewhere in the website because this can cause you duplicate content and it doesn’t sit very well in google ranking factor, for authenticity checking, there’s Copyscape for you.

Yoast SEO

Let’s move to the backend side. Meta data are how your site will communicate to Google with what the page is all about, it’s those snippet that you see on Google when you search for something before you click and visit the website to read more, most CMS based sites like shopify, magento, and wordpress have a pre-built SEO section for each pages and I highly recommend you fill this in properly. Yoast SEO, for example, is a good tool for this task.

Speaking of pages, if your site has multiple broken links or dead end pages, it basically tells Google that it’s a low quality site and sending visitors there will only result in poor user experience – Google doesn’t want that! So in order to check any 404s, 301s, 302s, use a software called ScreamingFrog to crawl all site assets because most of these cannot be seen easily without a proper set of tools. Pro tip, you can easily export the sheet and start re-writing the meta data from there.

When providing SEO services in Singapore, what we noticed that helped cement trust with our clients is by providing that daily historical chart of their keyword rankings which clients themselves can access 24/7 as well as a competitor benchmarking where they can see clearly how they fare well in the competition. These metrics along with the user behaviour, conversion breakdown per channels, top performing campaign, and online to offline conversion tracking helps our clients to make a clear idea on how to acquire, educate, retain, and build loyal customers for their business.

These are among the tools that we use for SEO and if you are a beginner wanting to get your hands on doing Search Engine Optimization, this is where to get started.

The role of meta description and title tags is to inform search engines and users what your website is all about. They describe the content on every page of your website and explain how it is related to a user’s search query.

If you are still not sure of what meta is all about and how to incorporate them onto your SEO, here are 5 quick and easy tips that will help you:

  • Page Title: Your page title entry is shown in search engine listings and it should include your target search phrase. Also, the title copy, for maximum readability, should be less than 70 characters.
  • Meta Description Tag: A meta description, like page title, should be optimized for your target search phrase and, for better display, it should be no longer than 160 characters. Your meta description tag is where you put the page summary or introductory texts that entice search viewers to click-through.

Google confirmed a small update to its algorithm in September 27, 2018. This update is a further enhancement to its prior major update dubbed “the Medic update” which affected medical, clinics and health-care related websites.

Effects of algorithm updates such as this one can be permanent for sites exercising questionable and blackhat practices as the update is meant to capture exactly those bad practices. On the other hand, sites that are clean from malicious behavior will usually regain the lost rankings in three weeks or once the updates settles.

If you’re one of our SEO clients, here’s what to expect

  1. There will be a decrease in keyword ranking BUT expect that this is only temporary while the algorithm re-calculate and weed out non-SEO conforming websites.
  2. We are prepared for this. Do not worry.

At Skubbs, our practices adhere to Google facilitated guidelines. We do not practice blackhat SEO.

Simply put, the only way to counter this algorithm shake is to move forward as usual and maintain the usual activities. Aggressive reaction to this type of algorithm changes can only lead to a more confused algorithm which could worsen the situation.

Our action items:

  • link building
  • blog updates
  • further page enhancements
  • monitor for improvement. We will keep you updated once the algorithm stabilizes on your website.

The Impact for non-conforming websites
Significant decrease in Organic traffic, drop in keyword ranking and position, diminishing visibility on relevant search terms or a combination thereof. If unattended, they can expect less and less enquiries / leads coming in from the website and, ultimately loss of customer and market share in Google.

Feel free to pass this information.

The online platform serves as an equal ground for all businesses, regardless of its scale, to promote their products and services. Indeed, the digital age has allowed startup companies to be at par with their far more established competitors in terms of advertising and promotion. We’ve touched this topic a couple of times in our previous articles, but we’re saying it again—one of the key activities that a business owner can utilize is search engine optimization or SEO.

As a business owner, you might ask yourself, “what can I do today to help improve my rankings?” Lucky for you, we have listed not just 10 but 13 things you can do to kickstart your SEO efforts.

1. Focus on what you are offering to your customers

Pinpoint the value you are offering. What can the prospect customers get from your business? By doing this, it will be easier for you to create content and choose target keywords that are most suitable for your SEO endeavours. It also creates a path for your customers on how they will find your business.

2. Fix your technical SEO issues

Good content is great. Eye-catching media, graphics, colours, and font are also a big plus. These are only a few of the essentials your website must have. However, one must not forget to go technical when making sure your website is SEO-ready. Establish a sturdy foundation before anything else such as the speed on how your page loads. Because let’s be honest, who has the time and patience to wait for a website to load? Also, this includes ensuring that you do not duplicate any of your content, all links are not broken, and each one leads to the correct pages.

3. Optimize your pages

Page optimization is putting out quality content that lowkey sneaks in your focus keywords. Furthermore, you have to pay attention to your titles and meta descriptions, making sure that they too are of quality and contains keywords that users will deem useful for their search. You might also want to optimize these areas for higher click-through rates (CTR), as they are the ones parsed from your website and used in search engine listings. The more enticing and relevant the texts are, the higher the likelihood of the searchers to click through to your page.

4. Be natural in adding keywords

The beauty of SEO is being able to wedge a keyword in a sentence without the keyword seeming off or out of place. It is recommended that you put in place a keyword without jeopardizing your content. You have to make an effort to seem completely natural. Don’t oversell or overdo it. SEO is a matter of making sure that your website is not just structured in a way that the search engine will understand, but also making it valuable for the readers.

5. Check out Google My Business

If you haven’t used Google My Business yet, then we suggest that you do now. It’s very easy to update and it can create big impact on your SEO efforts, especially if you have a brick and mortar business. The best part about it is that it’s free! To optimize it, you have to make sure that you are in the correct category of your business. One of the functions that you can use is its questions and answers feature. By staying on top of these, users can get more details about you in a snap.

6. Learn more about your competitors

Aside from focusing on your business, it’s also vital in this industry to check up on your competition. It’s a wise move to know about what they are doing, how they are doing it, and if these efforts are effective. Furthermore, other information you may check up on are what their current rankings are, how their website is structured, and the quality of their backlink profiles. Look for their weaknesses and something they may have missed or done incorrectly. From there, you can come up with a strategy that will make you the better option.

7. Get links from websites in your local area

An often overlooked move that business owners do is getting links to your website, especially coming from businesses just around the area. This helps improve your ranking, believe it or not. When you receive more traffic from these linking opportunities, there are more chances that you will receive quality leads that can possibly convert as customers. Think of it as a PR effort when you spread the word about your business.

8. Add Schema markup

Schema markup is a code that is put on your website to help search engines provide snippets of useful information about you to the users. These information includes components such as your address, business hours, phone number, and ratings.

9. Make use of reviews

Are you the type of person who would check the reviews of a movie first before watching it? Or do you ask your friends if they liked this new meal of your favourite restaurant? People nowadays often look up reviews first before trying out a product or service. Reviews are one of the leading local search ranking factors in 2017. At the same time, when you receive feedback from your customers, you not only improve your conversions, at the same time, you are also informed about how well you are doing in terms of your service.

10. Cater more to the eyes

Websites usually provide not only words but also images and videos. This is a great move to be ahead of the competition. It also gives the eyes a chance to rest and see something different for a change. Plus, with the advent of social media, these digital assets can be your way to gain social citations.

11. Try Paid Search Advertising

A quarter of the activities businesses need to do is SEO, while another quarter is paid search advertising (PSA). Since SEO may take a while before results kick in, you can try giving it a headstart. PSA is a great way to show the leads the front entrance. Organic results are great but a little paid help is also useful.

12. Have a link-worthy site

Visits from users are earned. You have to make sure that your website is worthy of these visits. The same thing goes with being link-worthy. Instead of having “click here”, why not input the title keyword as is? “Click here” has no search engine value while title keywords help improve your search engine ranking. Ultimately, produce high quality and link-worthy contents for they help generate natural backlinks and regular visits.

13. Use alt tags

When you are using images, make sure to use alt attributes. These will serve as the alternative text description if the image cannot be displayed. Utilizing this will help search engines and users understand the visuals on your page especially when viewed on text-only browsers or screen readers.

There you have it! With these 13 SEO hacks, productivity and results are bound to come your way. SEO shouldn’t be done just once. There’s a reason why it’s called optimization because it involves improvement over time.
