Hi, this is Casey from Skubbs. We are a full stack digital agency. We develop websites, mobile apps, and provide digital marketing services – hyper local Search Engine Optimization among the main ones.

Today, I will run you through some of the SEO tools we recommend if you are going to be doing keyword research and on-page optimisation for your website.”

Ok, so without further ado, let’s discuss the tools:

Google Analytics

It all starts with a search. If you have a website, Google Analytics or GA is the most important and the first thing you should install because it shows you how the traffic is engaging to your website.

Google Search Console

Next, you want to uncover what are the keywords people use in order to get to your website from Google, and here’s where Google Search Console or GSC will come into play.

Google Autocomplete

Now that you have the essentials, it’s time to create a plan on how to draw potential customers to your site using the keywords they will often look for in Google and this is where Google autocomplete comes into play. Try typing head terms and you can see at the bottom of the page the common search phrases – hold those lists down because you will be using that as a reference later on when you start writing your blog, we will expand more on that topic in a couple of minutes.

Google Keyword Planner

Once you have the head terms, plug them to Google keyword planner and see how many permutations, top volume search and the cost per click amount you need to pay in order send the traffic to your site, this is paid search and we will cover this on another video but let’s keep our focus on SEO.

Ubersuggest, KW Finder and KeywordTool.io

Similarly, you can use Ubersuggest for checking keyword permutations, KW Finder, and Keyword Tool.io. But I recommend to stick to Google keyword planner for now because if you’re starting from 0, you can just simply enter your website and have Google suggest what are the best keywords based on the services you offer. Make sure your service pages or product pages are well written.

SEMRush

For intermediate users, SEMRush is the tool. Also, from here, you can do a reverse research on your competitors and what keywords they are using to get their customers.

Now that you have the list of popular keywords based on their monthly average search volume on Google, it’s time to optimize your site to increase the relevance. And by relevance, it means content, and the most common thing beginners do is they pepper the keywords as many times as they can around the website. WRONG! If this is 6 or 7 years ago, this might work, but with Google major algorithm updates like Panda and Penguin, your website gets easily penalized for keyword spamming.

So, what do you do? You go back to Google search console and look at the google autocomplete or the suggested related searches at the bottom and start writing 2 blogs according to those.

In the question of how often should I state the keyword, don’t sweat it – once is enough, what is important is the main idea: the context, because Google is the biggest encyclopedia and thesaurus in the world and it is smart enough to pick up what you’re writing is about.

Copyscape

Now if you’re outsourcing the blog or the page content of your website, you want to make sure it’s not a copy-paste of another article somewhere in the website because this can cause you duplicate content and it doesn’t sit very well in google ranking factor, for authenticity checking, there’s Copyscape for you.

Yoast SEO

Let’s move to the backend side. Meta data are how your site will communicate to Google with what the page is all about, it’s those snippet that you see on Google when you search for something before you click and visit the website to read more, most CMS based sites like shopify, magento, and wordpress have a pre-built SEO section for each pages and I highly recommend you fill this in properly. Yoast SEO, for example, is a good tool for this task.

ScreamingFrog

Speaking of pages, if your site has multiple broken links or dead end pages, it basically tells Google that it’s a low quality site and sending visitors there will only result in poor user experience – Google doesn’t want that! So in order to check any 404s, 301s, 302s, use a software called ScreamingFrog to crawl all site assets because most of these cannot be seen easily without a proper set of tools. Pro tip, you can easily export the sheet and start re-writing the meta data from there.
